God is life. He alone has immortality. The Bible tells us that people who choose to trust and love God — those who want to be with Him forever — will “put on immortality” when Jesus comes again. In other words, God (who is life) will sustain life in them. This is the promise of everlasting life (life without end).
It’s important to understand two attributes of everlasting life:
- Everlasting life is contingent upon trust in Jesus (see John 3:16). Not everyone chooses to trust Him, and God respects each choice.
- Everlasting life will begin in the future, when Jesus comes again (see 1 Corinthians 15:51-53).
Be careful not to conflate everlasting life with the counterfeit doctrine of the immortality of the soul.
